Map description:
La Matanza de Acentejo is a village at the north coast of Tenerife with more than 8,100 inhabitants and an area of 14.11 kilometers ². Neighboring municipalities are El Sauzal in the northeast, Candelaria in the southeast and De La Victoria Acentejo in the Southwest. The Acentejo is a region in a kind of balcony-way region at an altitude of 1,500 meters, between the Teide-mountains and the rocky coast which falls up to 300 meters douwn to the Atlantic Ocean. The area is very fertile and well supplied with water so there thrives lush vegetation. Thus, agriculture is the main livelihood. Among other things, bananas and wine are grown.Since swiming possibilities are rare and difficult to reach, tourism here is still very individual. The place is little affected by tourism, but is a perfect starting point for walks through the extraordinary landscape up to the recreational area "La Vica". Although located in the north, it rains much less here than in other areas. The topography prevents that the Passat wind clouds not dwell here on slopes, but move on quickly. The name of the city comes from a battle in 1494 when the Spaniards attacked the Guanches, the aborigines of the island. La Matanza means something like massacre or the slaughter, which probably indicates that there has been many deaths at that time. It is one of the saddest chapters in the history of Tenerife.
