Only when the neighboring town of Garachico was totally destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the year 1760, Puerto de la Cruz developed to the largest port in the north of Tenerife. More than 100 years ago the British were the first who has chosen this city for their holiday destination. Since the 1950s Puerto de la Cruz changed to a tourist destination and is til today. Until today Puerto is known for its beaches and the sea. The nearby beach "Ballullo", located in a bay, is often used by locals on weekends.
